A Special Tribute to Mac Nason – from a former Student

On Monday, March 25, 2019, the Ottawa Library and Information Technician world lost someone valuable. Corey Mac Nason died suddenly at age 65 that day. He had been our professor for the Library and Information Technician department at Algonquin College – Woodroffe Campus.

He is remembered by former students as funny, caring, and honest. He also was an inspiration to a lot of us who were pursuing cataloging careers. It was through his classes that I learned a lot about cataloguing. Although I wasn’t very successful in my first attempt at cataloguing, I improved in the next class because I realized that I had come in without having a true understanding of the subject. Once I raised my expectations and sought help, I did better. Professor Mac Nason taught me to always strive to do my best.

For the Ontario Association of Library Technicians – Ottawa Chapter / Association des bibliotechniciens de l’Ontario – Section d’Ottawa, he would be known for helping coordinate the Annual Student Meet and Greets at Algonquin College.

Some further memories from his classes include:

  • The time he taught us to catalogue Winnie the Pooh (so that we could learn to catalogue in different languages with the same idea in mind on how to catalogue).
  • The times he would end his sentences with “And Bob’s Your Uncle”.
  • His quirky sense of humour.
  • His discussions about his love for dogs.
  • When he would say:  “I’m happy” if the whole class understood a part of his cataloguing lessons.

He will be missed and always will be in our thoughts as we continue to strive in and for our Library and Information Technician Careers.
